Admitting an Animal to the Humane
Educational Society
Surrendering your companion animal to a shelter can be a difficult
decision. Once you have made this decision, the Humane Educational
Society will care for your animal with compassion. All available
resources are put forth to place each and every animal admitted to the
Society into a loving home. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee adoption
for any individual animal.
Help is available for many behaviors considered inappropriate to
guardians.
Before your final decision to surrender your companion animal, please
consider
our resource list for training
and behavior solutions
which might enable your animal to remain in your home.
Should you decide to surrender your animal to the Society please bring
all veterinary records you have, including vaccination history. The
owner/guardian surrendering the animal must be 18 years of age or older,
and provide a Tennessee driver’s license or another form of photo
identification.
HES is a non-profit organization, depending on community support. A
suggested donation of $25 or greater is requested to assist in the cost
and care for your animal. All donations are appreciated however, as the
average cost per animal during its stay at the shelter is $150.
Owner surrendered animals are available immediately for adoption, unless
they are a puppy or kitten, in which case they are quarantined for 14
days. Every effort will be made to place owner surrendered animals into
loving homes. However, animals with serious temperament or health issues
may be euthanized in a painless and humane manner.
Strays brought to the shelter by the general public are held for five
days if they have no identification, or ten days if they have
identification before becoming available for adoption. However,
applications for adoption are accepted prior to the date the animal will
become available. A pre-paid adoption process is available to all
approved applications, enabling an animal to go to its new home
immediately upon its release date. Please contact our adoption office
for further information if you would like to adopt the stray animal you
bring to the Society.
